Abstract:
Oral dosage forms are the most commonly used pharmaceutical forms for drug delivery; which is why it is necessary for the delivery system to be formulated in the way that it enables the best possible apsorption in order to accomplish the desired therapeutical effect. Thanks to the advances in the field of material design and engineering new polimeric materials are being developed that can modify drug release.
Modified release dosage forms are devided into two groups : extended release systems (matrix and reservoir systems) and delayed release systems (enteric coated systems and colon-specific systems).
In order to accomplish for the drug to be released in a desired way formulation of the drug includes specific polymers , that can be hydrophilic or hydrophobic in the case of matrix or reservoir systems or they can desolve at specific pH values or undergo enzymatic-bacterial degradation.
