Abstract:
Properties of stems and fibres of industrial hemp Cannabis sativa L. var. sativa on five varieties from the Slovenian national list of varieties (Bialobrzeskie, Benico, JUSO 11, Unico and Novosadska). The experimental work included manual extraction of fibres from non retted stalks which was very time-consuming. The quantity of fibres extracted from branched stems was low, especially because the stems were not retted. In average, the stem stalks were 1830 mm long (the minimum length was 800 mm and the maximum 2460 mm), the mass of stems was 31 g (the minimum value of 7 g, maximum 99 g); the thickness of the stems on the lower part was 2.5 mm (the minimum value of 0.2 mm to a maximum of 9.5 mm); the thickness of the stems on the upper part stood at 0.9 mm (the lowest value was measured at 0.1 mm, the maximum at 11.5 mm). In average, the fibres mass represent 32 wt. % of the stems. The extracted technical hemp fibres had an average tensile strength of 173.8 N, an average breaking load of 28.58 N, the specific breaking stress was 257 MPa and elongation at break was 1.09 %. The breaking force of elementary fibres was 88.7 N, the specific breaking stress 703.1 MPa, and elongation at break was 6.42 %. Hemp fibres contained 2.71 % of inorganic substances (ash) in average, they absorbed 8.07 % of water at an air temperature of 23 °C and 50 % relative air humidity. They contained an average of 12.3 % of water-soluble substances and 8.5 % of pectin. Untwisted hemp fibres were used as weft for the production of decorative fabric. This fabric was used to produce a handbag.
